She does this because she thinks her friends will think she is crazy. Grace lies to her friends on more than one occasion. Grace says her grandfather and other officials smell like “cigars and grandpa’s good Tennessee whiskey" after a poker game. Grace takes “pills” that apparently help her deal with stress. We learn that Grace accidentally shot and killed her mother. She is drugged, tied up in a room and then chews through her restraints. Grace believes she saw her mother killed in a fire. Everyone in Grace’s life has concocted a story to explain her mother’s death to protect her. Grace’s grandfather tries to protect her, but lies to her to accomplish this. Grace and the other embassy kids discuss the lies their parents tell. Grace’s friends rally around her to help stop a murder. After she swears she sees her mother’s killer and then overhears his plot to kill the President, Grace and her friends work together to unravel what is really going on. When she is sent to live with her grandfather, a US Ambassador, she enters the world of Embassy Row. Sixteen year old Grace thinks she has witnessed her mother’s murder.
